Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment by adding new accessories. They can also increase the base stats of the item or provide additional benefits. To upgrade an item, the player has to have it in their inventory, as well as access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

There are three kinds of upgrade components including universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which include gems, can be placed in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions, which can only be placed in gear that is ascended and legendary equipment are similar to jewels but have higher bonuses and cannot be placed in any other type of equipment. Suffix upgrades are able to be placed in gathering tools, will add their name to the end of the name of the item they are attached to, for example adding the word Glyph to the Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor would make it a Canthan Staff Wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the case of upgrades to gather tools, if a player replaces one glyph with another the previous glyph will be returned to the inventory. However, replacing any other upgrade component can destroy it, excluding inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important changes from previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can only be upgraded a certain number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level, however the materials required do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the impact of those items, rather than spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
This will allow the item to receive new upgrade components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is referred to as the Artisan's Power and it resets to 0 on failure or increases when the upgrade is successful.

Many players are known to reroll their weapons and equipment particularly in the beginning stages. Rerolling can provide a much faster route to a more powerful character, allowing them to reach higher levels and progress in the game faster.
Sets
